Frigate Hessen (F 221) leaves the naval base in Kiel and passes the Kiel Fjord on its way to the Baltic Sea.

The frigate Hessen was a guest at the Kiel-Wik naval base from March 18, 2022 to March 20, 2022 and left the naval port on Sunday afternoon for the Baltic Sea and Lübeck Bay. The frigate Hessen (F 221) entered service with the German Navy in 2006 as the third ship of the Sachsen class. Wilhelmshaven is the home port of the three naval ships frigate Sachsen (F 219), frigate Hamburg (F 220) and frigate Hessen (F 221).

The Hessen is 143 meters long, 17.4 meters wide and has a crew of 255 men. The frigate Hessen was built in the shipyard Nordseewerke Emden (NSW).

Naval ships in the naval base in Kiel can be photographed and filmed particularly well from the Kiellinie Kiel. Especially if, like the frigate Hessen, you are moored at the front pier. If the warships leave the port of Kiel towards the Baltic Sea, then the Falckensteiner Strand at the Friedrichsort lighthouse is the ideal shipspotting location, as this is the narrowest point of the Kiel Fjord and the ships pass the Kiel Fjord very close to the shore.
